http://members.westnet.com.au/nicholas.finch/ for the vids of both new kites
Well , I can say that if you were a tribal fan last year than your going to love the new
model. I had a chance to fly the Tribal II 13 meter with the boys on friday as well as the
Rival 14 meter in about 8-10 kts. There are no reviews / info available anywhere online from
f-one as yet but I have some pics and a vid that I will put online somewhere when i get a
chance.
I flew the tribal II again today along side my impat 13 and a 06 Tribal 13 to gauge the
differences.
FLYING The 06 impact turns a tiny bit sharper than the 07 tribalII but not faster, the impact speeds accross in a straight line faster than the 07 tribal by maybe 10 or 15% but the impact has a slight tip shudder or a looseness in the back sides ( not flutter) most advanced riders will notice this as it only happens when you power the kite up, and send it and ease the bar out to get the maximum speed and pull, if you keep the bar in, on the impact you loose a little speed and power but it won't shudder, it may bend at the tips a bit instead.
If you send the Tribal II, there is nothing, it is as smooth as a babys' bum. I didn't pump it up rock , just ~ 6psi and there was no shudder. I tried everything i could to get the tips to bend or the back to shudder and i couldn't make it happen, in contrast the o6 tribal was the easiest to get the tips to bend ( but didn't shudder) and the impact could do both ie shudder and bend doing different crazy hard turns. Bear in mind the average user sees none of the shudder or tips bending unless there either hugely overpowered or havn't pumped up the 06 kites enough BUT the 07 tribal is gold and was smooth no matter what i did with it out of the box with factory settings . The pull was very similar to the impacts but at a slightly slower speed and just as much but not as instantaneous. I think this will be an awesome all round kite. The bar pressure is less than the 06 tribal and feedback has increased so its about halfway between the 06 impact and the 06tribal in terms of bar pressure and turning pressure. Its awesome if you get sore arms or suffer tennis elbow because it turns efortlessly, especialy in the light winds. The pull is a little gruntier than the 06 tribal but not as direct as the impact, that will remain the " hardest core" f-1 kite for a while i think.
All in all this kite is awesome. The one word to some it up would be smooth. they seemed to have bought the best of both worlds into the 1 kite that still has the massive depower , fast speed and light on the arms. and pretty much addressed everything people were thinking " if only this was better". Interesting to see what other people think aswell. out in stores in a month or so
Rival, I can't say as much for the rival as I havn't flown it as much, but the 14 rival pulls harder than the 13 tribal, the rival has higher bar pressure with a lot more feedback, it doesn't turn as tight as the tribal but about as quick and requires a lot more force due to the higher bar pressure to turn. If your a heavier person i think this may appeal more to you due to the higher bar pressure and extra grunt and speaking of grunt man this kite is GRUNTY!!, I couldn't boost on the thing caus it was only 10 kts or so but I can imagine BIG would some it up. Same bar and lines setup as the tribal and the depower seemed to work aswell , albeit it the rival is a higher aspect and has a lot thinner aerofoil than the tribal.
Between the two of them theres probably something for every1 , the Rival im almost certain will jump higher with more hang time and get hevier people out of the water than the tribal and has the classic c-kite mid-bar pressure etc..., but the tribal is quick, light steering / bar pressure, lots of depower, very stable ie awesome to sit ther while your on a wave and flys so smooth its hard to fault.
Below is some quick differences I noticed for ppl who are interested aswell.
07 Tribal II Vs 06 Tribal The 07 kite has two front connection points and 3 rear
connection points to let you dial in whatever mode you like to ride in. from the factory
these are set on the front front and the rear on the centre setting.
The top Y or 5th line connection points have moved into about the same
spot as the Impacts' on the 07 kite vice sitting out on the first set of off-centre struts.
This relieves the pressure hugely if your trying to flip the kite on it's canopy after if
lands face down in the water as the pivot point is now closer to the balance point. (ie less
pull to make it flip )
The "bridal" or whatever the technical name for the front / fifth line
setup is gone, now the setup is almost identical to the impacts except the top y is huge (
the same size or bigger thant the 06 Tribal top Y which is way bigger than the impacts) and
the front line y is far bigger than the 06 tribal front line Y and the 5th line is not
attatched anywhere to the front lines any more.
The neoprene ( thick black soft padding stuff) reinforcements are gone. there are none on this kite, on the 06 they are on the canopy where the struts are and also spaced along the leading edge , this time there are None. The struts look like they have a heavier (than the rest of the kite material) dacron reinforcement above them on the canopy and thats it. less weight and less drag. than the 06.
The tips hav a new cross cut section along the leading edge to distribute the load and stop folding or kinking in stronger winds alltogether.
The kite itself looks like a lower aspect than the 06 kite and is definately not a bowlike shape at all, its a c-kite with a nice c-shape , perhapse more so than the 06.
The valve velcroes are sewn to the kite so its now impossible for the plastic to come off the end of the valves and undoe due to crashing etc..
The 5th line runs up from the bar the same as the 06 tribal / impact
and then there is a couple feet of bungee built into the 5th line before it connects to
smaller diameter line. where this is (about 10 metres up) on the otherside of the connection
is a metal ring built into the single front line before it splits and a small boble on the
5th line to stop it pulling any more 5th line through( or towards the kite) than front line.
Ie the 5th line length between your safety leash and the bobble is now fixed ( all be it
there is a foot or so of bungee at the end) and on the kite side of the stopper you can
adjust the 5th line length if needed. but at teh front lines stretch / load up , the 5th
line will now automatically stretch as much if it is required due to the floating bobble.
Out of the box i found witht the kite in the air, the kite side of the 5th line bobble was
tight / as tight as the other lines, and the bungee side was drooping a couple inches at
most.
Thats all for now.
