Interview:

If you had the chance to go for a100,000 USD wave, would you do it? (I guess they mean a 100 footer…)

PC: When I’m out Towsurfing I basically go for whatever size wave comes my way. The interesting thing about picking waves when they are that size is that you never know the size of the wave until after you are already into it. When you see the wave coming in the deeper water can tell that it is going to be big but it grows more in size as it hits the reef.

Tell us 3-4 things that were on your mind when preparing for the 70 footer…

PC: The forecast for January 10th (the day I rode the 70 footer) was for Jaws to be big. But the forecasters underestimated the intensity of the storm that created the waves. I went to Jaws that morning thinking that it was going to be a big day but not an epic day. I brought some new boards which I wanted to test out. I was mainly interested in seeing how the boards were working because the forecast was for the next swell to be bigger. I was pretty nervous when I arrived at Jaws because for the 1st hour of watching, I only saw two waves where the riders did not fall off. It was a pretty crazy day.

Your best kite experience in 2004

PC: I had two great sessions in 2004. The first one was at Jaws. I was able to ride some waves while being powered by my kite. By the end of the session at Jaws, I would use the kite to tow me into the wave, then I would let go of the kite and surf the wave. We had to go and collect the kite with a jet ski each time but it was definitely fun. The second great session for me was in Rarotonga in the South Pacific. I love travelling to remote islands to discover new riding possibilities.

When not travelling, working and kiteing, - how is the everyday for Pete Cabrinha?

PC: the best thing in my life right now is hanging with my wife and daughter. My daughter is almost 2 and a half years old. She’s at a really fun age. Its like having a comedian around the house the whole time. I surf a lot when there is no wind and I do art.

How is your relationship with Robby Naish? Do you communicate on product development?

PC: Robby’s great. He and I are pretty busy with work and life and don’t get to see each other very often. There’s so much history between us that I feel there’s a strong mutual respect. He was one of the first guys to call and congratulate me when I won the Billabong XXL Award. That’s class. Life is first, business is secondary.
Rob and I don’t discuss products much but sometimes we discuss the state of the industry. Cabrinha and Naish are two of the top brands in the sport so we need to monitor everything from beach access to safety.

als je het vertaald wil hebben, moet je maar even naar systranbox.com gaan. Als het frans is of zweeds ofzo ligt het anders, maar Engels kan toch wel bijna iedereen.
