WSSRC Record Attempt

Antoine ALBEAU has set a new outright sailing speed record of 49.09 knots on the canal in Saintes Maries de la Mer, France, subject to ratification by the World Sailing Speed Recorcd Council (WSSRC).
After months of waiting for the big mistral winds, the speed canal on the shores of the Mediterranean sea came to life again. Strong mistral winds with 45-50 knots hit the speed strip at a perfect angle, and although the conditions were quite gusty several riders set personal best speeds.

Early on the first runs of the "big three" Antoine ALBEAU (FRA), Patrik DIETHELM (ITA) and defending world record holder Finian MAYNARD (IVB) showed, that this day would have the potential to become historic.

At 09:30 DIETHELM was the first one making waves, setting a new world production speed record with his F2 Missile XS at 46.51 knots, subject to World Sailing Speed Recorcd Council (WSSRC) ratification.

Around noon, 12:29 hours exactly, Frenchman Antoine ALBEAU hit a big gust and flew down the 1 km manmade canal. The scoreboard stopped at 49 knots, after extensive video checking with the observer from the WSSRC, the speed was verified at 49.09 knots, 0.4 knots faster than the old record of MAYNARD.

The riders then pushed for the elusive 50 knots mark, the magical barrier in speedsailing around the world, but by the end of the day no one was able to increase the previous performances.

Dat zijn die gekken in Frankrijk die ieder jaar een kanaal graven op het strand van een kilometer of wat lang, van een meter of 10 breedt, en een cm of 50 diep (je ziet in het filmpje de graafmachine nog staan.

Ik zie een kite daar nog niet doorheen gaan, veels te gevaarlijk als hij een wipe-out maakt. Wil dik hard zeg.

Kom op met die Bandit 6.5m2, pak je 5e record zou ik zeggen!

haha nee joh Michiel, dat is een vaargeultje door die zoute blubberlagunes daar, je hebt daar ook weggetjes (dijkjes) naar het strand met bruggetjes over dat kanaal om bij het strand te komen. Die vaargeul loop valk achter een reep strand. Het is daat zo windzeker ivm een bepaalde aanzuiging op het vasteland. Je zou daar ook kunnen kiten, die jongens hebben nog wat diepte nodig om die vin te steken...

haha nee joh Michiel, dat is een vaargeultje door die zoute blubberlagunes daar, je hebt daar ook weggetjes (dijkjes) naar het strand met bruggetjes over dat kanaal om bij het strand te komen. Die vaargeul loop valk achter een reep strand. Het is daat zo windzeker ivm een bepaalde aanzuiging op het vasteland. Je zou daar ook kunnen kiten, die jongens hebben nog wat diepte nodig om die vin te steken...

Ik dacht dat jij vroeger windsmurfer was, want in de jaren 80 was dit strand in Saintes Maries de la Mer regelmatig op high five. 
Inclusief hoe ze die geul ieder jaar speciaal voor het speedsurfen aanleggen. Je ziet de graagmachine staan in het filmpje. En een scheepsschroef (ook outboard) heeft een grotere diepgang dan een windsmurfvin!

Blubbergeulen door het grote getijdeveschil aldaar meanderen, en dat surft niet lekker rechtdoor

Saintes Maries de la Mer in southern france will open its Speed Canal again. The chase for records and the 50knots barrier will take place with a selection of competitors on a 1000M canal in Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, france. The event is slated to take place throughout the entire winter months of 2007/08 for a period of 5-months. This is the ideal time to harness the energy generated by the famous South-East and Mistral winds and the location is proven with eight outright world records in the past 20 years.
 
THE CANAL
The 'Canal', as it is known to the sailors, is the unmistakable location where today's windsurfing technology has the potential to explore the unknown depths of speed. The trench itself is 1,100 meters long with a width of 30 meters.
There are three overlapping, 500 M courses on each side accommodating the four quadrant wind directions. NW, N/NE, SW & SE. The two most favourable directions are the widely known 'Mistral', which blows from a N/NE direction and the 'Le Marin', which blows from the SE. This particular wind carries enormous potential to deliver on a grand scale.
The Canal will be moulded and cared for by Christophe Simian and Fabrice David, who are very experienced collaborating record attempts in Stes. Maries and all potentially fast times will be officially ratified by the WSSRC, who will have an observer on hand.
