Test Conditions:
Locations: Perth, Wedge Island, Gnaraloo (all in Western Australia)
Discipline: Strapless freesurfing
Wind strength: usually somewhere between 13-30knts
Swell: 0.5 - 5m
For people learning, freeriding or interested in riding big waves or punchy beach breaks, this would have to be one of the best kites on the market. Recently I had a chance to compare the Catalysts with the most reputable wave kites around. The Catalysts seem so much more pure in design. Rather than using pulleys or extra struts, the outstanding performance is achieved using the highest quality materials combined with the finest design and quality control.
On the water, the first thing to notice is how smooth and responsive they are. The handling is light, quick and very user-friendly. The flying characteristics provide a smooth ride even in choppy or gusty conditions. The depower is smooth and progressive and relaunch is almost automatic as you sheet out, turn the bar and let the kite do the rest.
On a wave, the maneuverability and responsiveness of the kites allows you to comfortably direct the power with one hand. The stability and drift suits those who like to park the kite and ride, even on the fastest waves. The kite is easily quick enough to follow through any bottom turn or aerial maneuver. The smooth, responsiveness brings even more freedom to those who choose to ride unhooked or on a surfboard without straps.
The strength and durability of the kites has been proven in their high popularity and success as a school kite. The one pump system and large valve takes the effort out of setting up and packing away, just take care to keep the seal clean of sand.
There are a number of options when it comes time to packing up. The kite comes with a simple strap to keep it packed in a quiver of other kites. Then there is a thin drawstring bag for the back of the car. The final option is the large sturdy gear bag big enough to fit a kite, bar, harness and wetsuit which is ideal for travelling or those adventure treks in search of the perfect wave.
I’ve recently been using 20m lines bringing the maneuverability and responsiveness to a whole new level. On a lot of kites, shorter lines mean a twitchier feel particularly in gusty conditions. Being such a smooth kite to fly, the Catalysts just feel insane. I’ve yet to come off the water without feeling absolutely stoked.
