Please don’t start an argument, this post is a serious warning to inform of a possible safety lack.
I'm not a Gaastra user, last Sunday a friend of mine tested a Jekyll kite and when he came back to the beach we had a look to the QR system and we couldn't open it. Another friend with big and strong hands after some attempts was able to open it, we closed it back and again locked. I'm quite sure that this device isn't sand free and should be reviewed.
I tried to inform Gaastra Sunday evening but until now no answer, so I decided to take the resposability to inform kiter’s community. If someone has a direct contact with Gaastra, please inform them to release an official answer about this issue.

Hi, First of all: did he or anyone else touch the safety? (with something else other than hands, like with a screwdriver)
There's a screw in the middle of the safety (you can see it next to the red-arrow on the picture you posted), if he has replaced his de-powercord ever, or maybe just opened the system just to take a look at it. He might of screwed it TOO tightly. Simply unscrew it a bit looser, and you should be fine, you can test it while you are loosening it.
I'm a Dutch promo-rider. Using this system of 4different bars now for 8 months, zero problems. I think it's one of the best safety's out there. Sand never affected my safety's.
If you have any questions, feel free tot contact me at morres (at) home.nl
I've also forwarded your problem to Gaastra's design department

It is a problem, I used to teach with the 08 and 09 Jekylls. the 08s have a nice chicken loop that works, the 09s have big problems. We immediatly had a problem with the QR on the 09 chicken loops not working, contacted Gasstra, they sent us a diagram of the quicken loop and told us to untighten the screw (as previously mentioned above). this kind of works but then the QR stops working again, so we ended up replacing the 09 chicken loops with 08s. Problem solved, but this is unexceptable, I worked for a large school so had alot of these kites, as so many seized up we changed all the chickenloops as I wouldn't trust them.

Hi Morres, thanks for informing Gaastra
We have no idea of the "history" of this QR because it was a test kite, but it was a 2009 model and brand new for sure, let say max 10-15 sessions usage because the season started 2 months ago.
I started another post about boxed QR and the KF community agreed about one technical detail: boxed QR are not safe and sand affects its functionality, the result was that the a brand changed it completely.
I understand there is also business behind, but kiter's security is more important. Plus the company making the equipment should be aware that if a customer has an accident and can demonstrate the QR has design lack then he could take the company to court and I think win.

i use the 2009 Gaastra bar (as showed above too) and dont have any complains yet. i´ll take care about the screw (you can level your requested release point very precise, and i actually like it to be more hard, so it do not opens by accident).
And of cause, i check and clean my QR from time to time. like this this good looking thing works fine for me...
Anyway, i agree, that it could be more simple and easy. to clean the qr is kind of tricky (spring inside etc) but if you checked the mechanism once, you will understand how it works, and where there might be the problems. hope gaastra will come up with something new next season.
if yours is not working... i would contact your gaastra dealer and see what he has to say!
