Despite of the many kiteable beaches in Mauritius you mostly hear about one spot: Le Morne. This is undoubtedly a challenging place for expert riders but everyone should be aware that this spot has some downsides as well. Read the report from North-teamrider Will James
"Coming through the inside section at warpspeed, the wave would start to do funny things. I distinctly remember flying through one section and watching a huge square ledge form on the wave as water being sucked off and unseen coral head. Even scarier than the wave was the realisation that there was no backup. We were paying an old fisherman in a boat $10 a day to provide support, but there wasn´t much he or anyone could do if things went wrong. There´s no way the boat could make it out the pass. Importing jetskis is banned in Mauritius, and as a result a surprising number of people are out the passes each year. Is really one of the most dangerous setups around. Huge amount of water are forced out through the passes, so swimming won´t do much good. The night before, a young Belgian windsurfer has broken down before sunset at the inside of the pass. He sent his buddies in to summon the "support" boat, a 16-foot wooden fishing boat, and was never seen again.
After a couple of hours Jaime went down on the inside. I came in to help, but cleaned out myself, due to the offshore direction of the wind on the inside. Luckily, I was able to find my board quickly and set about to locate Jaime´s board.
To my horror Jaime was bodydragging and pumping the kite the best he could, but was going backwards out to see. He was caught in an impromptu river of whitewater ripping over the reef not even a proper pass. Miraculously his board was also caught in the rip and floated right up to him, and we both called it a day. We both agreed, that it was the heaviest session we´d ever done on a kite and were fortunate to have made it back to the beach without major drama."Zo lees je ook wat mindere info over die kitespot, ik ga mijzelf lekker focussen op Belle Mare!
