Review for North Rebel 2007 9.0
Times tested: 11+
Range: 16kn to 35kn
Good: - Depower
- fast steering and flying
- Direct bar feel
- agility
- clamcleat and stopper on new 2007 5th bar
- If desired you can shorten depowerline to prevent total depower (I do not like total depower
Bad: - stability in gusty conditions
- water restart not as easy as with similar SLE
- Factory set-up of new 5th bar
Review: Bought this kite because of the depower ability, and I want a good kite for waveriding with a wave directional (tuflite surfboard). But also have fun when riding flat water with a twin.
First attempt was very dissapointing. The new bar right out of the factory has too long backlines, and the depowerlength is way too long for me (my length 180cm)
After putting the backlines on the 3rd knot, and shortening the depower-line to the yellow markings, the kite was totally different.
It has moderate bar pressure, and when you put the steering lines on the inner bar width adjustment it handles very well. I prefer to fly the kite on the back pigtails.
It feels like a C-shape, but way faster and much more power in the low-end. I can stay upwind with a small twintip when others are flying 14/12m2 C-shapes.
Best windrange on a twintip is above the 20 knots.
The kite accelerates very fast and responds very accurate. With pressure on the back lines it feels like a C-shape, with feedback (which you do not find on a SLE with pulley-bar)
Jumping is easy. But in order to get real height you need to be in the high-end range, and your timing needs to be pretty accurate. When you hit the sweetspot jumps are high and more hangtime than any other kite I tried before.
Jumping is like a C-shape, you need to be powered up and steer the kite to 12 o-clock. Steering it back a bit more seems to help to get high! Do not forget to steer in the air for extra airtime, and to prevent the kite to overfly.
Generates much power when making loops. The wider the loop, the more power!
I would not recommend this kite for beginners or intermediate kiters. It is very fast, and when you do not pay attention for 1 sec in 20+ knots the kite can be in the middle of the powerzone, or somewhere else you do not want it.
When you overfly the kite in jumps, the kite can sometimes fall out of the sky. lengthening the 5th line with 5cm adds some stability.
Water restart needs attention. You need to know how to act with the 5th line system. Also watch the video on the North website when the kite has fallen down on its back. Also inflate both the struts and LE until they really are firm. This makes a big difference when you try to restart the kite.
Waveriding with a surf directional is pure fun. However due to the fast flying/steering of the kite you have to keep the kite moving in the lower end of the range. This can be hard when you ride with straps toeside. When the winds picks up that problem is gone!
