Free kitesurfing is no longer “free” to Greece

Hellenic Coast Guard recently made a decision establishing some rules in Greece for the recreation activity of kitesurf in Greek waters along with procedures and restrictions that have to be followed by the clubs renting kitesurf equipment for safety purposes.

According to the above decision, kitesurf as a recreation activity is only allowed in beaches that have been rented by private persons or companies (clubs) for kitesurf purposes only.
As a result, kitesurf has been declared as an illegal recreation activity to all other beaches in Greece.

In addition, many of the restrictions included in the related decision, made kitesurf activity looks like an impossible mission!

KiteMag.gr Editorial Team, after consulted legal advisors, we started a protest by developing a petition and announced it to the Greek Kiteboarding Community, requesting their support by signing it. The petition has been send to the proper superior authority of Hellenic Coast Guard which is the Secretary General of Security - Maritime Navigation of the Minister of Citizen Protection.

Secretary General of Security - Maritime Navigation suggested a meeting with KiteMag.gr Editorial Team in week 23. The aim of the meeting is to claim our arguments and suggest our proposals in the frame of keeping kitesurf recreation activity free. We do understand that logical, functional, and safety rules have to be established in respect of swimmers and all other sea activities.

Laat ze lekker de pleuris krijgen daar. Eerst geld van de EU ontvangen en dan ook nog beperkingen opleggen.

Zal wel meerdere redenen hebben. Gewoon als kitesurfen en tourist dat Greece boycotten.

Het Griekse plan lijkt enigszins op het Italiaanse strandbeleid m.b.t. gebruikmaken van strand en strandfaciliteiten.


btw de knoflooklanden hebben toch al vaak vreemde wet- en regelgeving als het gaat om strand- en waterbeheer.

Naar de laatste berichten wordt er hier en daar toch een Griekse ambtenaar een beetje "zenuwachtig"

Dear Sirs,

On behalf of the Greek Kiteboard Riders Association, full member of IKA and the organizers of PKRA in Greece, I would like to inform everyone that, indeed a miswritten circular was issued by the port authorities in Greece which is banning our sport to be held outside the flagged areas of the clubs.

The circular has no legislative value and is violating the constitutional laws of our country.
After a private meeting we had with the Admiral who is the responsible to compose the circulars (unfortunately not this one) for the Greek port authorities, we were assured that it was a miswritten article and that the current status will change within the next few days. As he initially mentioned:
“It could not be worst written and for sure the port police officers will never enforce it until it is settled”.

Greek waters are included among the best kiteboarding destinations worldwide. We intend to keep them that way and ride every single inch of them.

We will keep everyone up to date and inform you as soon as this misunderstanding comes to an end.

Heb gelijk de koelkast ingekeken en alle feta weggegooid !

Ik snap er echt niets van. Totaal failliet land, enige motor die nog een beetje pruttelt voor de economie is de toeristenindustrie en dan met meest gunstige windomstandigheden kunnen ze dat prima exploiteren en gooien ze het dicht.

Vorig jaar op Rhodos geweest en zou zo weer een week boeken. (Blij dat m'n dame voor over 2 weken voor Fuerte ventura heeft gekozen ;-)) Pfewww...

Ik had begrepen dat ze met tweedehands Hollandse fregatten liggen te loeren op kitesurfers daar voor de kust met de goal-keepers

Ik zag overigens dat die petitie al aardig begint te lopen. Posten we hier ook nog de uitkomst. Handig voor al diegene die Griekenland overwegen voor dit jaar.
