EPS= extruded poly styreen? white balls foam?
Can't use it. it's to soft, it can't stand the pressure of the heels. it will dent the board will crack.

I was thinking about Expanded PolyStyrene and not Extruded but you are true, it's with white balls. I asked this question because I know a guy which has made his board with EPS foam in high density (30kg/m3) but with a strong lamination (epoxy resin) and he has been really happy. I am curius to know what sort of core is generally used in the making of kite boards?

* Most starting builders here, start with woodies... multiple layers of triplex glued together, creating a hollow board, often reinforced with minor layers of glass combined with epoxy or sometimes polyester. * The builders going for build nr 3, 4 or 5 often simply use corecell, airex or pvc-types... sometimes even simple insulating foams like polystyrene... * The master builders are very often building full woodcores with different kinds of woodtypes, and different types of layers, glass, carbon, pbt, and so... Or foamies like the not-that-dummies.

Hi Adrien,
I'm just a hobby kiteboard builder. Just working on board 14 in the row. My first boards were crap, but at the time I was very happy with then. Now I have a room full of kiteboards wich I don't use anymore............
I've been experimenting with different types of materials. I started building with corecell foam only. 3 layers of 7 mm. Fully laminated with crossed glassfibre cloth and epoxy. Also laminated around the rails. I soon started using sidewalls, made from epoxy. I prefabricate them in a plastic U-strip, before I stick them around the board.
Now I'm using different mixes of materials, like different types of plywood, Corecell foam, topsheet materials, ABS etc. Just what I feel like is good for the characteristics of that specific board. If I've finished my existing project, I will build a full wood core (Karuba wood) to see what I can do with that.
Where exactly will you be in the Netherlands?

Adrien, I am also just a hobby builder, think the best builders we have around these days are Xtreme kiteboards and a very good second is Ozzie with his manufacturingline.. :-)) Xtreme is the pro one which started of like most of us. I started of with some foam / epoxy / glass boards, followed by 2 carbon foam boards, following the trend of the High Pressure Laminate ( the kitchentops ) followed by two pbt boards, last december I build my first full woodcore twintip fliptip.. Recently I am the owner of a pile off full karuba woodcores which I have ordered for some members of this wonderfull website and myself.. I try to exchange experiences concerning ways of building with in particular Leonb, and sometimes Ozzie an others as well. I think I have build around 10 glassboardss, 15 HPL's and 2 pbt's and my first woody.. It is a great hobby, and my current projects are a full woodcore transparant 128 x 38 with fliptips for a friend, as well a summer oard, 130 x 38 of something with my last pbt sheets.. I received your mail concerning the cores, the best you can do is use a full wood core, if not available.. don't build as it won't last..

Hey Adrien, I've received your mail. I’m a hobby builder too. I’ve build 9 boards so far. Not as much as the rest of de “building dudes” of this forum. Most of the time I’m concentrating on “Tooling” and presentation via my website: www.squirtnatic.nlMaking nice tools can be an addiction too (gnehehe… ) Anyway…. Building with wood cores is de best there is in my experience. Stronger boards with more flex. This year I’m planning to sell some of my latest creations to cover some costs…. We will see! Regards, Leon Berkhout

Before all, thank you very much to everyone to have answered me so quickly, I really appreciate the sympathy of the Dutch people. With you, my project will have another dimension. So I will try to answer to each of you but one by one.
Firstly Fré, thank you to have helped me, now I can see that different types of construction exist, it depends if you are a starting builder or a rookie builder. In the same time I supposed that but I didn’t know the manners to do it.
Lord of the boards, I think that your future project for a wooden board is a very good idea. Here in France I see a lot of sandwich construction with balsa wood in the making of surfboards but with a core of EPS foam, and if we leave the visual aspect aside (that I find really nice), the wood has excellent properties for the slide and the curves etc etc… I haven’t all the vocabulary to explain it but I am sure that you know what I am talking about. A lot of kiteboard buiders (pro or amateur) seem to make a part of their boards with a wood core. Futhermore, I am sorry for all your boards which are sleeping in the room, it’s sad for them but now you have ideal boards for all the different conditions and all your friends…. And to answer to your question, I will live in ‘s Gravenhage but I am still waiting for the confirmation of my stay. But if I come (that I hope a lot) it will be surely in this town. Thanks again and if you don’t mind I keep your e-mail in the case of …..
Elevation, when you said that Xtreme kite board started like most of you guys, it is motivating for you, isn’t? It prouves that we can live of our passion, and I think that it’s important. Moreover, thanks a lot for all the others precision about the making. And do you really think that with a foam EPS core, a strong stringer and a good lamination (epoxy), the board won’t last? And if you put a layer of carbon or something that will make sthe board stronger? I am not a specialist so I am asking me… I know that in the making of surfboards EPS + epoxy is one of the best combination for the durability (and it is the most respectful of the environment). It’s true that we don’t jump like you can do in kiteboarding, so ….
Leon B, I visited your website and it’s pretty cool, and mostly yours boards, nice prints…Did you do it by yourself or are you lucky to have a friend in design ? I like kite boards because in general, makers can make a very nice print and personalise the boards, better than in surfboards or windsurf boards. And I note, wood core is the best construction for you …and as I told Lord of the boards, I agree for the flex because I saw some experience too but for the rest I never try.
Ok guys, I hope that I didn’t asleep you with my answers but I prefer to do the things like that. Last question, and for everyone, have you already tried to make kiteboards but more with a surf aspect, to go on the wave? It demands more work of shape… Maybe not because the conditions in the Netherlands are not in accordance with this type of kitesurf?
Thanks again guys and do not hesitate if I can do something for you. Reguards, Adrien
